» Rossies shoulder hopes of the West OKAY, we may begin. Make sure you're sitting or lying in the most uncomfortable position possible. Put on a Joy Division album. Turn a garden hose on yourself till you're wet through. Eat the cold, congealed remnants of a three-day old snack box. Watch Brian Cowen speaking in the Dáil. Sky Plus that. Watch it again. And again. And again. By now you should have some idea of the mood which held sway in the west of Ireland in the 1980s.

» HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH NEW HOPE LAST February, Jim McGuinness gathered his Donegal under 21s into a huddle and told them they would win the Ulster title. One player started to laugh -- the giggles bursting out before he even realised it.
» Rising side reach new level ALL the talk in the build-up to last month's Connacht final centred on Sligo's heroics in overcoming Mayo and Galway. It presumed that this had earned them the right to be named champions-elect.

» Getting on with the game I N a recent online poll in the Meath Chronicle, almost half of voters opposed the decision not to offer Louth a rematch after the Leinster final ended in calamity. As a measure of public opinion, it is not claiming to be scientific, but nonetheless conveys some degree of conflict in the Meath state of mind. Ultimately, however, people will read what they want into polls and if they don't like the outcomes, they'll dismiss them.
